Die Südinsel Neuseelands wird durch die 35 km breite Cookstraße von der dichter besiedelten Nordinsel getrennt. Ihre Fläche beträgt 151.757 km2. Auf ihr befindet sich der mit 3.754 m höchste Gipfel Neuseelands und des australischen Kontinents in den Neuseeländischen Alpen, der Mount Cook. Im Osten der Insel befinden sich die sanft abfallenden Canterbury Plains, im Süden befinden sich zahlreiche Fjorde. Die größten Städte der Südinsel sind Christchurch und Dunedin.Der Māori-Name für die Südinsel lautet Te Wai Pounamu (Jadewasser), oder auch Te Waka a Māui (Das Kanu von Māui).
